Day Two

Neck and body separated, hardware removed, guts torn out,  lots of macros taken in the hope that it will one day come back together.

The headless wonder.

Time for some stripping fun. I didn't research this, just bought the strongest stripper I could find at Fleet-Farm. Smart, right? It's just paint.

After 45 minutes of soaking in chemicals, not much was happening. I tried scrubbing it with fine steel wool and wound up with nothing but really clean steel wool. But note the really cool use of toothpicks in the string cavities and painter plugs used to keep goop out of the threaded bridge holes.

EDIT: See Day Four entry where I get a clue and decide to remove all hardware and toss the toothpicks.

I hit it with another coat of miracle stripper and went up for a delicious dinner of chicken parmesan (thanks Jennifer!) and decided it might be time to research. It seems guitar paint "is basically spray epoxy" and the only way to remove it is with a heat gun. I don't own a heat gun. Fsck.

Went back to the garage an hour later to wipe the crap off and start fresh tomorrow. Instead, I found bubbling paint. WOOT!

Maybe it's the cheapo guitar, but this stuff was lifting off. Purple flakes, followed by some shimmery silver stuff, then actual wood. Scrubbed what I could, then called it quits for the night, we were getting ready to watch "The Great Wall" featuring Matt Damon.

Btw, "The Great Wall" featuring Matt Damon is a suck-ass movie. Spend your time stripping instead.

More work tomorrow.
